JEEPNEY - THE KING OF THE ROAD

Jeepney, was originally a US military transport
Jeepney mirrors the Filipino life. Full of color, durable and family oriented as it can carry an entire family even those with extended ones.
It came to existence right after World War II when Americans left hordes of US military jeeps in the Philippines. These military transports, out of Filipino's natural creativity and ingenuity, were then converted to utility vehicles. Filipino locals stripped down the jeeps to accommodate several passengers, added metal roofs for shade, and decorated the vehicles with vibrant colors and bright chrome hood ornaments.
World War II virtually destroyed all means of public transportation. The jeepney was Filipino's way of reestablishing an inexpensive public transport as they rebuid their lives.
Jeepneys are one of the Philippines' well-received original attractions. Foreigners were mesmerized by its uniqueness and durability. All over the world, these vehicles can only be found and run on Philippine soil. But do not underestimate its capabilities, because it can bring you wherever you want to go, that is by land of course.

Through the years, the design and the capacity of this “King of the road” have improved to many variants and builds, but nonetheless, still innately Filipino. Even a single jeepney has a unique quality over others. On the road, it's hard to see two exactly identical jeepneys. Thanks to owners who contributed their own personalities to make their vehicles one of a kind.
By sheer glance at a jeepney, you would know how the owner got the funding to buy the vehicle. Designs like “Katas ng Saudi”, “California dream”, etc are common. You can also have a clue as to who owns/own the vehicle as names of owners are usually part of the design.
Philippine land transportation has been conquered and ruled by jeepneys. With a much-improved engine and power nowadays, they can outrun some branded car models. And they still remain the main mode of transportation all over the country.
E-jeepneys, short for electrical Jeepneys, were the brainchild of Mr Robert Puckett, President of Solar Electric Company in the Philippines. These E-jeepneys or minibuses, under the support of Greenpeace started plying Manila / Makati City streets on July 1, 2008. 4 e-jeeps were launched by Makati mayor Jejomar Binay on 2007, with 2 prototypes from Guangzhou, China at P 371,280 each. "The first public transport system of its kind in South-East Asia," the vehicles can be charged by plugging into an electric socket, using power from biodegradable waste. E-jeepneys would also soon begin commercial operations in Puerto Princesa, Bacolod and Baguio. The 2 new e-jeeps were made by the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP), while the first 4 units were made in China. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board classified and registered them as LSV (low-speed vehicles) or 4-wheeled motor vehicles that use alternative fuel such as electricity and running a maximum 40 km per hour. The E-jeepney carries 17 passengers and can run 120 km on an 8-hour charge from an electric outlet.
You cannot find a place or town in this country, where you cannot see a jeepney. The Philippines is a nation divided by seas, since it is an archipelago, but is majestically united by its fondness of jeepneys.
Almost every Filipino has dreamed, or at least has once dreamed of having or owning a jeepney. It is a status symbol, especially in the countryside. A family who owns one has a reputation of being well off and financially stable, though it is not very prevalent in urban areas. Elders would say that you could raise and support a family if you own one.
Filipinos' loving and caring nature can be seen and felt in how they manage and maintain their jeepneys through all these years. In Metro Manila alone, you can still find a jeepney which was assembled thirty years ago, and still in great running condition, giving income to its owner. And this is all about maintenance and hard work of its owner because engine or other troubles would mean less income. That is why they love their jeepneys so much.
The jeepney, purely Filipino… a class of it's own.
