What are the traits of an efficient transcriptionist?

By Archie de Lara

An efficient transcriptionist has common sense. If there is one trait that needs to be put first on the list, it would be to have common sense.  Practicality and sound judgment are just two of the keys to have common sense.  Common sense, in the very sense of the word, is to know what common people would regularly agree on. People are different in so many ways but successful and efficient people are nearly of the same mind on what it takes to attain their needs or wants – be it small or a big thing. It is logical to say that almost everything around us exists for a reason. Say for example, a particular electronic gadget was invented because a person beforehand had a thought of needing or wanting it. Having common sense is not just the mere knowing of what you want but also doing things to achieve it in which I will be expound on the next traits

An efficient transcriptionist is professional. Know your job. To be professional is to abide on your job's transcription standards.  Usually, guidelines or rules are set in order to achieve maximum efficiency of the transcription work. Here, not only quantity but also quality should be maintained.  Delivery of work output should always be on time. Transparency should always be observed and this can be achieved by keeping your accuracy. A professional transcriptionist doesn't divulge any information to others regarding what she hears in the audio file. In the greatest relation to productivity, it is definitely a waste of time and also, it renders one unprofessional because that would be a break in privacy.

An efficient transcriptionist values quality. A quality transcription work is verbatim, correct in spelling, without typographical errors and whatever that makes the customer satisfied.

An efficient transcriptionist values quantity. Now let's talk about numbers. Both speed and time are in the essence. You can do more work if you have more time.  Fast typing skills will pull off more time to proofread your work before submitting it. Being a touch-typist aids in the speed of typing because 10 fingers can do more work than 2 fingers. Right? Accuracy is a huge factor when it comes to quantity. Who would want to have a wrong transcription? You don't deserve a pay for something that is too far from the accepted. To achieve this, the transcriptionist must also be good researcher because one cannot know everything in the world. Every transcriptionist should be eager to make efforts in improving the quality of his work.

An efficient transcriptionist is a continuous learner. To be efficient, one needs to be open to criticism as it can be constructive. Learn your reviewers and compare your projects before and today.  Most transcriptionists are proofreading their work before submission of work and yes, you learn on yourself without you even knowing of it. You can also be a lot more efficient if you continue to learn stuff like new trends, new softwares, new devices, and tips for improvement. Good thing that the Internet is providing us new stuff like these. Mostly they are readily available with just a few clicks away and all we need to do is read them.
