Night Sale Before Christmas
By Carmel Castillo

It's the holiday season. The streets are lined up with lights and décor, the malls are playing Christmas songs and packed with shoppers. Perhaps almost every week there's a 3-day sale going on. And we ourselves devote an ample amount of our time and energy “christmasing” putting up the tree, hanging a wreath, and of course thinking of what to give to our love ones. For it is truly the season of giving, ergo the season of buying for others and ourselves. Here are a few practical tips before braving the malls or even flea markets.
Shop Purposively
When going to the mall or other market place, it is wise to shop with a purpose in mind. Avoid buying items which are simply just “on sale”. A lot of people are guilty of this, buying things which really does not cost much, only to find out that you never really need or want it. I think this is the most important advice I can give. Especially if you have enough money, you tend to think “its cheap anyway, I can easily afford it”, is a trap. Beware and be wise so that you don't waste your hard (or even easily) earned money. Remember it's not just the price but the purpose.
Protect Yourself
When there are many people, there is a large possibility of getting germs and certain viruses. When going out make sure you are protected. Take your vitamin C to boost immune system, drink water to avoid dehydration, eat your complete meals for energy. Have a sanitizer to eliminate germs from your hands, from using the public comfort room or touching money or even touching surfaces. If you're really sensitive wear a protective mask. It is better to be safe than sorry.
Shopping with Pleasure
It is indeed a pleasurable experience especially with the right attire. Whatever you wear make sure it is comfortable and easy to move around. Yes, there are a lot of great items which are on sale, but sometimes you have to “dig deep” to find it. Your shoes are your shopping best friends! Put on something that's rubber-soled and fits well. When in doubt about your footwear bring an extra you can leave in the car (or carry around). Put on simple accessories for your stylish look. Ensure its simplicity so that it won't bother you when you want to try on something.
Make a Plan
Making a plan is working towards your purpose. It is a list of your recipients, things you need at home, your own holiday to-haves and other things you need at the mall. You should also plan on the budget that you are willing to spend and what gifts or items to buy. Plan for your available days for shopping and where to go. Plan also a “deadline” on when you should be able to finish from buying, packing, and sending the gifts. This is to make sure that you are able to attend to all your other commitments. And to avoid last-minute shopping! Last minute feels like work, the pleasure turns to pressure, and you end up getting whatever is there.
Make it Presentable
Wrap it nicely, there are many materials to choose from. Put a bow, place a card, it does not cost much. Put some creativity and uniqueness in your gifts. Giving gifts is likened to giving a part of you. It is simply completing the pleasing experience of gift giving season.
Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
